Is Your Organization Ready To Support The SMI Population In A Value-Based World? OPEN MINDS Releases Update On Estimates Of SMI & Trends In Enrollment Between 2016 & 2018

GETTYSBURG, Pa. (March 8, 2020) — A new report by OPEN MINDS, Distribution Of The U.S. Adult Population With A Serious Mental Illness By Payer: An OPEN MINDS Market Intelligence Report, found that 21 million adults in the United States have a serious mental illness (SMI) diagnosis. This is up from 2016, when approximately 17.9 million individuals over the age of 18 had a SMI diagnosis. Although an individual’s level of impairment will determine the need for health care services, those with SMI typically have increased health care utilization—making it imperative those with a diagnosis receive adequate health care coverage.

This report provides an overview of trends for SMI populations in commercial and private insurance, as well as enrollment. The report also provides a state-by-state breakdown for trends between 2016 and 2018.

“The rate at which individuals are diagnosed with SMI is on the rise – this means provider organizations need to focus their resources on supporting this population,” said Michelle Coughlin, vice president of Market Intelligence. “Most provider organizations already have the tools to support this population – tracking social determinants of health through electronic health records, using data to strategically track consumer outcomes and costs. It comes down to your organization’s ability to optimize technology, ensuring early and effective intervention.”
