Medicare To Cover Continuous Glucose Monitoring Devices Using Smartphones
On June 7, 2018, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced a change to Medicare’s coverage policy to allow for coverage of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) that will support the use of smart devices (watch, smartphone, tablet, laptop computer, etc.) to share consumer data with health care professionals. Previously Medicare did not cover CGMs used in conjunction with a smart device because consumer smart devices are not considered durable medical equipment (DME) because they are not primarily medical in nature and they are useful in the absence of illness.
