Heal is seeing the demand for house call services grow and is expanding its services into the New York City market with the acquisition of Doctors on Call. Founded in 1968, Doctors on Call is a medical house call service for the elderly servicing New York City’s five boroughs and surrounding areas. The company averaged 42,000 house calls to seniors in New York City in 2018. The acquisition was announced on September 23, 2019; financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Los Angeles-based Heal launched five years ago with the aim of reinventing primary care by taking an old model and giving it a modern twist. Heal enables consumers to call a clinical professional for a same-day visit in their home using an app, with a payment less than $150. Heal allows professionals to take more time with their consumers and have time left over to finish required documentation. Additionally, according to Nick Desai, co-founder of Heal, house calls can better enable professionals to address consumers’ social determinants of health, ultimately leading to better health outcomes.
The acquisition of Doctors on Call marks Heal’s entry into its largest single city, making Heal services available to more than 75 million Americans throughout Atlanta, Georgia; California; New York; Northern Virginia; and Washington, D.C. With the acquisition, Heal plans to transform an “old-school” people-intensive practice into an omnimodal care solution to lower health care operating costs and provide always-on, connected care.
The house call app service is on track to perform more than 100,000 house calls this year, representing 310% growth over the last 12 months. Heal estimates its house call services have helped reduce unnecessary emergency room and urgent care visits by up to 71% and also reduced hospitalization by 28%, averaging health care cost savings of an estimated $53.7 million per year. Heal also offers remote monitoring services through its Heal Hub, which helps monitor blood pressure, blood oxygen levels, and other biometrics in real time. The company’s services are available 24/7, 365 days a year.
Doctors on Call offers medical house calls for elderly and homebound consumers throughout New York’s five boroughs, Long Island, and Lower Westchester. The team of physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants provide expert medical treatment for chronic diseases, sick visits, and post-hospital care.
Heal is the market leader in technology-driven doctor house calls. Through the touch of an app or a click on the website, Heal enables consumers to easily book on-demand or scheduled doctor house calls, 8:00am to 8:00pm, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Heal has over 100 major corporate clients and is covered as an in-network benefit with Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield of California, CareFirst, Cigna, Health Net, Medicare, and United Healthcare.
