51% Of Specialty Provider Organizations Using Peer Support Specialists In 2017; Results Of OPEN MINDS National Innovation Survey Released
Gettysburg, Pa. (September 10, 2017) — OPEN MINDS recently released the full results of their highly-anticipated 2017 National Innovation Survey: Innovation Adoption Among Specialty Provider Organizations. The survey, which had over 9,700 participants, concluded in May, 2017 and aimed to detail the innovative programs and models having the greatest impact on specialty provider organizations in health and human services. OPEN MINDS first provided an initial summary of the survey findings at The 2017 OPEN MINDS Strategy & Innovation Institute earlier this summer.
The full results, released in a downloadable report (PDF) format, were made available at no charge via sponsorship from PsychU, a free online community and resource library for behavioral health professionals.
Headlining the report findings was the popularity of peer support specialists. Over half (51%) of survey respondents confirmed the use of peer support specialists in their specialist provider organization. The report also shows an increase of organizations currently ‘planning’ and ‘evaluating’ a variety of new innovative models in 2017.

The 2017 OPEN MINDS National Innovation Survey: Innovation Adoption Among Specialty Provider Organizations provides the latest information on the innovative programs health and human service organizations are adopting in three categories—program innovations (such as primary care medical homes or hospital diversion programs); treatment innovations (such as peer support programs, or the use of medication-assisted treatment in addiction treatment); and technology innovations (such as telehealth or eCBT). The report takes this data and provides in-depth analysis on:
- The number of innovative programs the average organization has adopted
- The most commonly adopted innovations by market, organization size, revenue, and profit status
- The most common programs organizations plan to implement within the next year
