OPEN MINDS Announces Two February Seminars Focused On Metrics-Based Management & Performance-Based Compensation

GETTYSBURG, Pa. (December 6, 2015) — OPEN MINDS announced two pre-institute seminars will be offered at The 2015 OPEN MINDS Performance Management Institute – “Using A Metrics-Based Management Approach To Manage Unit Cost & Pay-For-Performance Contracts” and “Implementing Performance-Based Compensation – Current Models, Issues & An Approach To Successful Implementation.” The pre-institute seminars are half-day, intensive workshops that take place the day before the official opening of the institute.

“In today’s health care landscape, financing and reimbursement policies are increasingly tying compensation to quality and performance,” explains Monica E. Oss, chief executive officer of OPEN MINDS. “In this new market, we’re seeing the emergence of a new set of performance metrics – from consumer experience, to clinical performance, to the ability to share data. Our 2016 institute is designed to provide a roadmap to success with pay-for-value, focusing on the ‘how to’ of pay for performance – from pricing and contracting, to financial management, to staffing.”

The seminar “Using A Metrics-Based Management Approach To Manage Unit Cost & Pay-For-Performance Contracts” will be led by OPEN MINDS senior associate Joseph Naughton-Travers, Ed.M. The seminar will take an in-depth look at today’s pay-for-performance environment, and how metrics-based management has become important in all aspects of managing a health and human services provider organization, including managing costs and navigating pay-for-value contracts. Metrics-based management has also proved essential as provider organizations are navigating new models of value-based reimbursement. The session will cover:

  • An overview of the concept of metrics-based management, including how to develop a best practice performance reporting system and utilize performance metrics to improve operational performance
  • How to use metrics-based management for financial operations analysis, including developing an understanding of the factors that contribute to organizational costs, and how to estimate and manage those costs
  • How to utilize metrics in the management of pay-for-value contracts

Mr. Naughton-Travers has more than 30 years of experience in the health and human service field and a broad range of experiences in private and public sector delivery of behavioral health and social services. Since joining OPEN MINDS, Mr. Naughton-Travers has developed business solutions for provider and professional organizations, state and county government, technology companies, and venture capital firms.

The seminar “Implementing Performance-Based Compensation – Current Models, Issues & An Approach To Successful Implementation” will be led by OPEN MINDS senior associate Sharon Hicks. This session will uncover the best practices in performance-based compensation, and the best strategy for implementation. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to review some examples of current models being used by provider organizations, the benefits and challenges associated with each model, and how to implement the best model for your organization. The agenda for this session includes:

  • How to measure clinical staff productivity
  • How to develop a compensation strategy that works for your organization
  • How to use productivity measurement to maximize your organization’s revenue potential
  • Examples of models from the field

Ms. Hicks has more than 20 years of experience in the health and human service field. She previously held a number of executive positions within the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) system and within its health plan division. She has extensive experience and wide range of expertise in health plan management, in clinical operations management, and technology.

The institute will be held in Clearwater Beach, Florida on February 11-12, 2016, with the pre-institute seminars taking place on February 10, 2016.
