GETTYSBURG, Pa. (October 24, 2020) – Just days before our historic election, nearly 700 executives from health and human service organizations across the United States will come together virtually, October 27-29, for The 2020 OPEN MINDS Executive Leadership Retreat. They will examine leadership lessons through the lens of history, using the Gettysburg National Military Park as a virtual classroom and immerse in a learning lab to review new cutting-edge leadership models for a future of uncertainty.

“The only certainty right now—with the trifecta of the pandemic, economic, and political crises—is uncertainty,” said Monica E. Oss, chief executive officer of OPEN MINDS, an award-winning information source, executive education provider, and business solutions firm specializing in the domains of health and human services. “If this past year has taught us anything, it’s that the unthinkable can happen at any time and leaders must be prepared to act when the unprecedented happens to protect their futures. With the right planning, the threat of the unknown can be minimized and poise organizations to succeed where others fail. Our Executive Leadership Retreat is designed to empower that planning.”

Featuring more than 30 sessions led by executives from 50 health plan and health and human service provider organizations, the Executive Leadership Retreat also features a 24/7 Virtual Exhibit Hall featuring leading industry vendor partners with new solutions for the next normal. Ms. Oss added, “I want to thank our event platinum partners—Qualifacts+Credible Behavioral Health, Netsmart, NephU, PsychU, and NextGen Healthcare and the rest of our partners—for their support during our transition to virtual events the last six months; we couldn’t do this without them.”

Keynote speakers are:

  • Susan Eisenhower, renowned author, speaker, policy analyst, and granddaughter of President Dwight Eisenhower (Thu, October 29, 12 pm EST)
  • John Lovelace, President, UPMC For You (Wed, October 28, 12 pm EST)
  • Mark Mishek, President & Chief Executive Officer, Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation (Tue, October 28, 12 pm EST)
  • Monica E. Oss, Chief Executive Officer, OPEN MINDS (Thu, October 29, 3:45 pm EST)

And on Wednesday, October 28, at 5 pm ET, just days before the polls close, the retreat will feature an Executive Roundtable – “Scenario Trump vs Scenario Biden: Implications for Health & Human Service Strategy.” Led by five executives in the field, they will explore likely election outcomes and their implications for policy direction in mental health and substance use funding, service delivery, and access.

Because our history informs our future, the retreat will feature virtual tours in Gettysburg National Military Park giving attendees a brief look of the historical Gettysburg battlefields with licensed battlefield guides, Robert Prosperi and Terry G. Fox, with ensuing classroom discussions on leadership lessons for the future:

  • Strategic Decision-Making In Times Of Change – Colonel Joshua Chamberlain and Little Round Top: Defending The Union Line (Tue, October 27 at 3:45 pm EST)
  • Leading In Times Of Uncertainty – Generals Lee & Longstreet At Pickett’s Charge: The High-Water Mark Of The Confederacy (Wed, October 28 at 3:45 pm EST)
