U.S. Behavioral Health Spending Tops $231 Billion According To New Market Intelligence Reports From OPEN MINDS

Gettysburg, Pa. (November 28, 2016) — OPEN MINDS has just released two new Market Intelligence Reports that provide a detailed update on spending trends in the U.S. mental health and addiction treatment markets, as well as breakdowns in spending by payer and care setting.

In 2015, mental health spending was $195.6 billion. U.S. per capita spending for mental health services in 2015 was approximately $608.49 per person. When mental health spending is broken down by payer, private insurance was the largest payer of mental health services at 28% or $54.6 billion in 2015, followed by Medicaid at 25% or $48.1 billion, then Medicare at 15% or $28.1 billion, and other state and local funds at 14% or $29.5 billion. In 2015, public payers (Medicaid, Medicare, other federal, and other state and local funds) accounted for the majority, 59%, of mental health spending. Private payers (commercial, out-of-pocket, and other private) accounted for 41% of spending. This breakdown has remained fairly stable since 1986 with very little fluctuation. This OPEN MINDS Market Intelligence Report, The U.S. Mental Health Market: $195.6 Billion In Spending In 2015, was developed from primary research and original analysis and includes trends in mental health spending, as well as U.S. mental health spending by payer and by care setting.

In 2015, addiction treatment spending was $36 billion. U.S. per capita spending for addiction treatment services in 2015 was approximately $112.08 per person. The addictions treatment services market includes health services for addiction and substance abuse. Addictions treatment services are provided by a wide array of professionals, including certified counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, and addiction specialists. This OPEN MINDS Market Intelligence Report, The Addiction Treatment Market: $36 Billion In Spending In 2015, takes a detailed look at trends in addiction treatment spending, including a breakdown of spending by payer and care setting.

“These numbers themselves are not meaningful, but there are some interesting implications within them,” said Athena Mandros, OPEN MINDS Market Intelligence Manager and co-author of the reports. “For organizations that provide (or manage) mental health and addiction treatment services, there are important strategic questions that must be asked, such as “Is growth in behavioral health spending exceeding total health spending growth?” and “How has parity affected spending during this time period? And will it cause spending to increase?”
