Technology Adoption Varies By Specialty Health Care Market – Results Of A New OPEN MINDS Sponsored By Credible Behavioral Health Software

Survey results show specialty provider organizations spend less on technology compared to other health care organizations

GETTYSBURG, Pa. (November 4, 2018) OPEN MINDS and Credible Behavioral Health Software released the full results of The 2018 OPEN MINDS Health & Human Services Technology survey. The survey, which looked at technology adoption and spending in specialty provider organizations, uncovered two key findings – that technology adoption varied by specialty sector and that investment in technology in the sector is low compared to health care overall and in terms of other industries.

The survey looked across four types of specialty health and human services provider organizations — behavioral health; children’s services, intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD) and long-term services and supports (LTSS); and federally qualified health centers and (FQHC) primary care. Among the 300+ specialty provider organizations surveyed, electronic health records (EHRs) were the most (86%) adopted technology. Although that number varied from a high of 96% in behavioral health to a low of 80% in primary care.

When you look at spending by specialty provider organizations, those with revenue between $10-$50 million, 70% had IT budgets less than $500,000. Surveys of the overall health care market show health care providers spend between 3.5 and 4.3% of revenue on technology budget. By comparison, financial organizations spend 7.2% of their revenue on IT and business and professional services organizations spend 5.2%.

Monica E. Oss, chief executive officer at OPEN MINDS presented some of the results of The 2018 OPEN MINDS Health & Human Services Survey at the OPEN MINDS Technology and Informatics Institute in October. During the presentation, Ms. Oss discussed the results of the survey, as well as a detailed analysis of the findings. The survey included details on topics such as:

  • The technologies most frequently adopted by specialty provider organizations
  • Technology adoption by specialty provider organization type
  • Electronic health record (EHR) and health information exchange (HIE) adoption, by market
  • Telehealth and remote monitoring adoption, by market
  • Specialty provider organization IT budgets
