This report was released on October ,1 2014 by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The data shown in this report reflect information collected by NCHS from death certificates filed in 50 states and the District of Columbia that is compiled into national data known as the National Vital Statistics System for the years 2011 and 2012. Life expectancy at birth for the U.S. population reached a record high of 78.8 years in 2012, largely due to lower age-adjusted death rates for chronic illnesses, influenza and pneumonia . . .
