Mental Health and Substance Use: Treatment Exclusions in Employers’ Health Insurance Coverage GAO-12-761R
A federal review of survey data provided by 96 employers sponsored health plans that offered mental health benefits found that a minority had exclusions for one or more behavioral health diagnoses or treatments. The review was a follow up to report issued in November 2011, which looked at trends in coverage for mental health conditions and substance use disorders. The follow-up was completed after the report to further look at additional information about plans' treatment exclusion for mental health conditions and substance use disorders.
