The Future of California Corrections: A Blueprint to Save Billions of Dollars, End Federal Oversight, and Improve the Prison System
As of April 25, 2012, the California Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (CDCR) reported that California's prison population was 137,761, 15.4% lower than the population in April 2011. The inmate census is currently about 155% of the states prison system design capacity, which meets a court-ordered population target for June 2012. CDCR anticipates that it will be able to meet the December 2012 target of operating at no more than 147% of design capacity.
