CMS Improperly Paid Millions Of Dollars For Skilled Nursing Facility Services When The Medicare 3-Day Inpatient Hospital Stay Requirement Was Not Met
The Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General (OIG) released this report on February 20, 2019. The objective of the review was to determine whether the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) paid skilled nursing facility (SNF) claims with dates of service during calendar years 2013 through 2015 when the three-day rule was not met. The three-day rule mandates that to be eligible for coverage of post-hospital extended care services, a Medicare beneficiary must be an inpatient in a hospital for at least three consecutive calendar days before being discharged from the hospital . . .
