15% Of United States Population Served By An Accountable Care Organization
As of April 2015, about 15% of the United States population, about 49 million people, is served by an accountable care organization (ACO). More than 70% of the population lives in a locality served by an ACO, and 44% live in areas served by two or more ACOs. There are an estimated 426 Medicare ACOs, and an estimated 150 non-Medicare ACO-like entities formed by commercial health plans or state Medicaid programs.
