VA Predictive Modeling Identifies Veterans With High-Risk Of Suicide More Accurately Than Clinical Data
A predictive model developed by the federal Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Veterans Health Administration (VHA) was more effective in identifying veterans at high-risk of suicide than traditional clinical interviews. Among veterans identified at the highest 5.0% risk level, suicide rates were about six times higher than expected based on clinical data. Among the veterans identified by the model as in the 1.0% highest risk level, only 8.8% of those who completed suicide had been identified based on clinical factors.
