U.S. Spends 5% To 7% Of Total Health Care Spending On Primary Care
The U.S. spends approximately 5% to 7% of total health care spending on primary care. The national average for primary care spending across public and private payers was 5.6% using a narrow definition, and 10.2% using a broad definition. The narrow definition focuses on spending related to primary care physicians in offices and outpatient settings. The broad definition includes all of the above, plus other members of the primary care clinical team, including nurses, nurse practitioners (NPs), physician assistants (PAs), OB/GYNs, and behavioral health professionals (i.e., psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers).
