U.S. Counties Have A Median Of One Mental Health Professional Per 1,620 Residents
United States counties have a median of 1,619 county residents for every mental health professional. However, the individual county ratios range from the highest concentration of 72 residents per professional in Quay County, New Mexico, to the lowest concentration of 55,969 residents per professional in Autauga County, Alabama. For this ratio, mental health professionals include the 426,991 mental health professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, licensed clinical social workers, counselors, and advanced practice nurses who specialize in mental health care) listed in the National Provider Identification File, 2013. Nationwide, the average is one mental health professional for every 753 individuals . . .
