Bankruptcy Rate Among Seniors Has More Than Doubled Since 1991
The rate at which seniors aged 65 and older file for bankruptcy has more than doubled since 1991. In 1991, the bankruptcy filing rate for those aged 65 to 74 years was 1.2 per 1,000 population; compared to 3.6 per 1,000 in 2013 through 2016. In 1991, the bankruptcy filing rate for those aged 75 years and older was 0.3 per 1,000; compared to 1.3 per 1,000 in 2013 through 2016.
