State autism insurance mandates requiring health plans to provide diagnosis and treatment to children with autism have helped 12% more children with autism obtain treatment. A comparison of diagnosis and treatment rates in states with and without an autism insurance mandate revealed that in states with a mandate, 1 in 555 insured children had received an evaluation that led to an autism diagnosis, compared to a rate of 1 in 625 insured children in states without a mandate.
