Share Of Safety-Net Reliant Consumers Under Age 65 Receiving Dialysis Rose From 11% To 14%
The proportion of those under 65 who were safety-net reliant and initiating dialysis increased from 11% to 14% between 2008 and 2015. These individuals were 30% more likely to start dialysis at non-profit and/or independently owned facilities, compared with other facility ownership types. “Safety-net reliant” individuals were defined as those who were uninsured or had only Medicaid coverage at dialysis onset, and had not qualified for Medicare by the fourth dialysis month.
