Presidential Executive Order On Child Welfare To Increase Partnerships Between Public, Private, Faith-Based & Community Organizations
On June 24, 2020, President Trump issued an executive order to strengthen the child welfare system. The order directs the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) to strengthen family reunification, reduce unnecessary removals, increase the number of foster families, and issue guidance to states on partnering with private provider organizations.
The order notes that although the number of children entering foster care has been declining for the past three years, of the more than 400,000 children currently in foster care, 124,000 are waiting for adoption, with more than half (58.4%) legally eligible for adoption. Additionally, more . . .
