Pennsylvania Sues UPMC Over Alleged Behavior Violating State’s Charity Laws
On February 7, 2019, the Pennsylvania Attorney General filed a petition to modify the Commonwealth’s Consent Decree with UPMC because the Commonwealth believes UPMC is violating Pennsylvania’s charities laws. The Attorney General's petition maintains that the charities laws requires facilities to participate in other insurer networks. The state’s goal is to prevent UPMC from ending its business relationship with a competing insurer, Highmark Health, which would mean that UPMC facilities and professionals would not be part of the Highmark provider organization network.
