Pediatric Mental Health Emergency Department Visits Increase From 50.4 To 78.5 Visits Per 100,000 Children
From 2012 to 2016, pediatric emergency department (PED) visits for mental health problems increased by 55.8%. In 2012, there were 50.4 PED visits per 100,000 children. In 2016, there were 78.5 PED visits per 100,000 children.
The majority of youth making a PED visit for mental health problems were publicly insured. The mean age of the children was 13.3 years. The rate of PED visits for mental health varied by racial demographics, with 51.5 visits per 100,000 non-Hispanic White children, 78.4 visits per 100,000 non-Hispanic Black children.
