Provider participation in the Medicare Bundled Payments for Care Improvement (BPCI) Advanced model decreased 16% between October 1, 2018 and March 1, 2019, after provider organizations were warned of an upcoming requirement to take on greater risk. When BPCI Advanced launched on October 1, 2018, provider organizations had no risk, but were required to assume risk to continue during the second phase, which began on March 1, 2019, and will run through December 2023.
