Mental Health Follow-Up Within 7 Days After Psychiatric Hospital Discharge Linked To Lower Suicide Risk Among Youth
For children and adolescents who are discharged from a psychiatric hospital, receipt of an outpatient mental health follow-up visit within seven days resulted in a 44% lower risk of suicide during the eight to 180 days after discharge. In those individuals studied, a total of 56.5% of youth received a mental health visit within seven days of inpatient discharge.
A mental health visit within seven days of inpatient discharge was more common in youth who had longer lengths of inpatient psychiatric hospital stays, such that those who stayed eight to 30 days were more than 1.7 times . . .
