Oregon DHS Agrees To Reduce Use Of Hotels As Temporary Foster Care Placements

On February 27, 2018, Oregon child welfare officials agreed to reduce the use of hotels as temporary placements for children in foster care. By July 1, 2020, the state committed to house no more than 24 children per year in hotels, and the state agreed to limit the length of stay for those who are placed temporarily in a hotel. During 2017, the Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS) Child Safety Division housed 213 children in foster care for at least one night in a motel or hotel.
