Incidence Of Opioid-Related Overdose Admissions To Intensive Care Up 34% Since 2009; Costs Up 58%
Since January 2009, the incidence of admissions to a hospital intensive care unit (ICU) due to opioid overdose rose by 34%, and the cost of these ICU admissions increased by 58%. In January 2009, there were 44 opioid overdose ICU admissions per 10,000 ICU admissions for any reason. By September 2015, the rate of opioid overdose ICU admissions had increased by 34%, to 59 per 10,000 ICU admissions.
