Change Management Models Key To Adding Addiction Treatment To Primary Care Practices
A family medicine clinic in Massachusetts was able to expand medication assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder (OUD) and implement safe prescribing for consumers taking opioids for chronic pain by using change management techniques. Using change management models, the clinic was able to expand the number of consumers with OUD receiving MAT from five at the start to 125 at any given time. The number of physicians with waivers to prescribe buprenorphine increased from one at the start to all 17 physicians and 24 residents serving the clinic.
