Number Of Juveniles In Residential Facilities Down 42% Over Past 15 Years
Between 1997 and 2011, the number of juvenile offenders in residential placement declined by 42% and the number of status offenders in residential placement declined by 64%. In 1997, there were 105,055 juvenile offenders in residential placement; by 2011, there were 61,423. During the 15-year period, less than five percent of youth in residential placement were there solely due to a status offense; the majority were there due to delinquency.
