New York Large Group Policies Must Cover Medication-Assisted Treatment In 2017
Health insurers offering large group policies in New York State starting January 1, 2017, must cover the costs of inpatient and outpatient medication-assisted treatment for addiction disorder. The new requirement includes medications, including naloxone, for detoxification or maintenance treatment. Inpatient addiction disorder treatment must be covered without preauthorization at facilities participating in the health plan networks that are also certified by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services. Insurers must eliminate prior authorization requirements for a five-day emergency supply of prescribed medications for the treatment of addiction disorder when an emergency arises.
