Between 2015 and 2019, the national inventory of senior housing units grew by more than 120,000 units to more than one million units. About 52.5% of the new units are for assisted living, representing nearly 63,000 units. In 2016, there were an estimated 996,100 units in residential care communities, which includes independent living, assisted living, and memory care units.
