Minority Children More Likely To Have Asthma & Visit EDs For Asthma

Minority children in the United States are more likely to have asthma than other children; they also have more emergency department visits for asthma. Asthma prevalence, by racial/ethnic group, ranged from 21.2% to 7.5% among Hispanic children. Among non-Hispanic black children, asthma prevalence was 14.5%. Asthma prevalence was 8.2% among non-Hispanic white children, and 7.1% among other non-Hispanic children. Among Hispanic children, asthma prevalence was highest (21.2%) among Puerto Rican children, compared to 7.5% among Mexican-American children, and 8.5% among other Hispanic children.
