LGBTQ Youth Disproportionately Incarcerated In The U.S. Juvenile Justice System
Juvenile justice facilities in the United States house a disproportionate share of youth who identify as sexual minorities: lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer or questioning (LGBTQ). In 2012, federal juvenile justice data found that 88% of youth in custody identified as “straight” and the remaining 12% identified as a sexual minority, LGB, and/or “mostly straight.” In total, about 3.2% of boys identified as gay or bisexual compared to 4.4% in the general population. Among girls, 39.4% identified as gay or bisexual, compared to 11.8% in the general population.
