Eight Outpatient Medications With 10%+ Annual Growth Rates Accounted For 19% Of 2016 Medicaid Drug Cost Spending
Eight outpatient medications with annual growth rates of over 10% accounted for 19% of Medicaid drug cost spending in 2016. Total Medicaid spending on these eight drugs totaled nearly $6.6 billion in 2016, and represented about 19.7% of the $33.4 billion in total federal and state Medicaid retail pharmacy spending that year. Of the eight drugs, three are psychotropics, two treat rheumatoid arthritis, two are insulin, and one treats nerve pain.
