I-SNP Medicare Members Had Lower ER & Hospital Use Than Institutionalized FFS Beneficiaries
UnitedHealthcare's Medicare Advantage Institutional Special Needs Plan (I-SNP) members had 51% lower emergency department use, 38% fewer hospitalizations, and 45% fewer hospital readmissions than institutionalized Medicare fee-for-service (FFS) beneficiaries. However, the I-SNP members had skilled nursing facility (SNF) use 112% higher than FFS beneficiaries. UnitedHealthcare's I-SNP plans provide on-site direct coordinated care for beneficiaries through the use of advanced practice clinicians. Estimated costs for the I-SNP members were 18% lower, at $7.5 million, compared to $9.2 million for the FFS beneficiaries.
