In 2018, U.S. health care spending grew 4.6%, reaching $11,172 per person and $3.6 trillion in total. Per person spending in 2017 was $10,742. The 2018 spending of $3.6 trillion represented 17.7% of the $20.50 trillion U.S. Gross Domestic Product. The growth in health care spending was associated with faster growth in the net cost of health insurance. In 2018, the net cost of health insurance increased by 13.2%, up from 4.3% growth in 2017.
