Fentanyl Involved In 19% Of Opioid Overdose Deaths From July 2016 To December 2018
Between July 2016 and December 2018, approximately 19.5% of all opioid-related drug deaths involved fentanyl or a fentanyl analog (synthetic opioids structurally similar to fentanyl, but modified to produce distinct substances). This represented 5,083 of 26,104 deaths in which at least one fentanyl analog was detected. There were 70,237 drug overdose deaths reported in 2017; two-thirds involved opioids.
Additional findings include:
