Feds To End Private Prison Contracts
On August 18, 2016, the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) directed the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) to reduce, and ultimately end, its use of private prison contracts. The private prisons primarily house non-citizen immigrants convicted of federal crimes, many for illegal reentry into the United States after being deported. Three companies hold BOP private prison contracts: Management and Training Corporation (MTC), Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), and GEO Group (GEO). Their facilities are located in eight states: California, Georgia, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas.
