Federal Prisons Fail To Adequately Address Confinement Of Inmates With Mental Illness In Restrictive Settings
The federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) fails to adequately address restrictive confinement policies for inmates with mental illness. As of June 2016, there were more than 148,000 federal inmates, about 7% were kept in restricted housing units (RHU). RHUs are defined as single-cell confinement units where inmates are kept for long periods of time, isolated from other inmates, and with limited human contact.
These findings were reported in “Review of the Federal Bureau of Prisons’ Use of Restrictive Housing for Inmates with Mental Illness” by the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) for the federal Department of Justice . . .
