In 2018, data breaches cost hospitals in the United States about $408 per record exposed. The cost of a health care data breach rose by 7.4% from the 2017 per-record cost of $380. In total, during 2016, the United States health care system lost $6.2 billion due to data breaches. The average per-organization cost of a data breach for the affected health care organizations amounted to about $2.2 million.
