As of September 2, 2020, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) requires that long-term care facilities offer coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) tests to residents when there is an outbreak or residents show symptoms. Staff must be tested routinely as a condition of participation in the Medicare and Medicaid programs. The frequency of staff testing is based on the degree of COVID-19 community spread.
