Child Care Is Unaffordable
Child care is unaffordable in all 50 states, plus the District of Columbia according to Child Care Aware® of America, which studied data from 2018. Depending on the region, child care prices that year ranged from $18,442 to $26,102 each year, with a national average of about $21,696 (information for specific states is not available). This is about $1,300 (6.4%) more than average annual housing expenses. In 2018, the federal poverty level for a family of three in the continental U.S. was $20,780.
