Faith-Based Adoption Agencies Sue Michigan Over LGBTQ Settlement
In late April 2019, two Catholic Charities organizations sued the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) over the terms of a state settlement that prevents faith-based foster care and adoption provider organizations from discriminating against potential foster and adoptive parents who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning (LGBTQ). The settlement of March, 2019 between the Michigan Attorney General and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) requires that adoption agencies and foster care provider organizations submit in-home evaluation forms to the DHHS regardless of religious affiliation.
