Boston Medical Center Develops EHR Tool To Screen For Social Needs
On May 16, 2019, Boston Medical Center (BMC) announced it had implemented a social determinants of health (SDoH) screener for primary care consumers in order to better identify and address their unmet social needs. The screener is called the BMC THRIVE Screening and Referral Program; it is based on the BMC electronic health record (EHR), Epic. Consumers complete the screener before an appointment. It asks about needs in eight domains, such as housing food insecurity, transportation, and employment, and autogenerates ICD-10 codes that are added to the consumer’s medical record.
