Medicaid Payments For Opioid MAT Drugs Nearly Tripled Over Past Six Years
The number of units paid by Medicaid for medication assisted treatment (MAT) for addiction disorder— buprenorphine, naltrexone, and naloxone— increased by 183% between 2011 and 2017. Nationwide, the unit volume for the three drugs combined increased from 54.1 million units in 2011 to a projected 153.3 million units in 2017. Only three states –Tennessee, Maine, and Utah – are expected to see an overall decrease in Medicaid spending for these opioid treatment drugs for this time period (-68%, -15%, and -2% respectively).
