ASAM Issues Consensus Document For Appropriate Use Of Drug Testing In Addiction Treatment
Drug testing should be done at least weekly at the beginning of addiction treatment, and at least monthly in consumers in stable recovery, according to a consensus document issued by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). Individual consideration may be given for less frequent testing if a consumer is in stable recovery. However, testing should be performed on a random schedule. Drug testing should be used with other methods of detecting substance use relapse or to monitor treatment, including consumer self-reports.
