Use Of Second-Generation Antipsychotics For Bipolar Disorder Rose From 12% To 51% Over 20 Years
The share of prescriptions for second-generation antipsychotics to treat bipolar disorder rose from 12.4% of prescriptions issued at outpatient visits in 1997 to 51.4% of visits in 2016. During this period, the number of outpatient visits for bipolar disorder rose by 127%, from about 467,000 visits occurring from 1997 through 2000; to about 1.06 million visits occurring from 2013 through 2016. During this period, the share of people prescribed medication to treat bipolar disorder who also received psychotherapy dropped from 50.9% in 1997 to 35.7% in 2016.
