Adults With Autism Who Received Supplemental Security Income Benefits Increased By 326.8% Between 2005 & 2015
The number of adults with autism spectrum disorder who received first-time Supplemental Security Income (SSI) awards between 2005 and 2015 increased by 326.8%, from 37,041 in 2005 to 158,105 in 2015. This population represented a growing share of total first-time SSI awards to adults with mental health disorders, rising from 1.3% of all 218,705 awards to people with mental disorders in 2005, to 5.0% of the 183,178 awards to this population in 2015.
