Those children who join families through the adoption process need specialized health examinations to address known medical needs and identify unknown problem. This recommendation applies to both domestic and international adoptions, as well as for those children who are being placed in the care of non-parental relatives (kinship care), and "safe haven" infants (infants who have been abandoned or subject to attempted infanticide).
