Psychiatric Admissions For Commercially Insured Youth Increased 26% From 2009 To 2014

Between 2009 and 2014, the number of commercially insured youth ages 2 through 18 with one or more acute care or specialty psychiatric hospital stays increased by 26.3%, from 21,805 in 2009 to 27,550 in 2014. During the same period, the number of commercially insured youth ages 2 through 18 declined by 15%, from 13 million in 2009 to 11 million in 2014. Most of the increase was in acute care hospital psychiatric or detoxification beds—the number of stays increased by 33.4%, from 12,058 in 2009 to 16,081 in 2014.
