Approximately 7.8 million direct care support positions will need to be filled by 2026. For all states, there were 4.52 million direct care jobs in the United States as of 2016 — and a projected 5.85 million will be required by 2026. In that intervening period, an estimated 6.4 million direct care workers will leave the labor force either for retirement or for positions in another field.
